Monday was the only day this week that I could fit in an evening session, having had a poor session at Hever over the weekend(I think I will give Hever a rest for a week or so) I decided
to try Christmas Mill.
Christmas Mill is somewhere I discovered only this year, I have been a member for 5 years but had never even seen this water before.
It is a fairly large pond that is up to 6-8 feet deep in front of where we can fish (6 well maintained bays) and then shallows up towards the far side. Lilies
dominate the aquatic vegetation and small roach and skimmers dominate catches here. Other species present include rudd, perch, pike (the winter pike fishing is apparently very good although no huge fish
are known of), tench and carp. A number of large features dominate some of the swims, a fallen tree offers a tempting target but is a tackle hungry snag.
This is a fun water for those who enjoy fishing light for the silver fish with large weights possible on the pole or waggler. For the specialist it is more of a challenge,
trying to avoid the attention of the small fish is the biggest problem. Finding good size fish doesn't seem to be the problem ( although bream seem to be the easy target ) but targeting a specific species could be
more of a challenge.
I fished from 5:30 pm until dusk with 6 reasonable size bream falling to groundbait feeder and quiver tip tactics with corn as the hook bait. I fished in amongst
the lilies on the far side of the lake. The depth of water where I fished was no more than 3-4ft and I think it would be more productive if I could find the drop off and fish tight to the lilies that fringe it.
As you have probably worked out from the articles and reports I have already posted, I have a particular love of tench. Although I am told they are present in
Christmas Mill I have yet to see any evidence of them. The carp can be quite active at dusk with rolling and splashing usually attributable to them, and the bream will show readily over a bed of simple crumb
groundbait, and bubble freely.
My next visit will be an all out tench attack although I will have to think about how I will avoid the attentions of the small fish and the bream. I will keep you
informed of progress, I will not be ignoring Hever but is nice to know I have an optional water.
